The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will commence pre-hearing proceedings on Monday, December 9, 2024, for petitions challenging the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

The Tribunal Secretary, Muazu Bagudu, disclosed this during a press briefing on Tuesday in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

On September 22, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Senator Okpebholo as the election winner with 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, who scored 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s Barr. Olumide Akpata, who secured 22,763 votes.

Dissatisfied with the outcome, the PDP and six other political parties filed petitions at the Tribunal, seeking to overturn INEC’s declaration. The PDP, in particular, is asking the Tribunal to nullify the election results and declare its candidate, Dr. Ighodalo, as the rightful winner.

The three-member Tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, will preside over seven petitions from various parties and candidates, including:

1. Suit No. EPT/ED/GOV/01/2024: Accord Party and another vs. INEC, Okpebholo, and APC.
2. Suit No. EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024: PDP and Dr. Asue Ighodalo vs. INEC, Okpebholo, and APC.
