The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has warned politicians in the state against attempts to influence judges in order not to drag the judiciary into politics.

She gave the warning in her speech during a lecture commemorating the 50th anniversary of the judiciary in the state. The anniversary lecture with the theme: “Fifty Years of Justice, Integrity and Public Trust: Building the Future of the Ogun State Judiciary,” was held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Dipeolu also charged judges in the state to always uphold the integrity of the judiciary, even when pressured by politicians.

She described the journey of the state judiciary over the past five decades as beautiful, and attributed its success to God.

Dipeolu, who reiterated the resolution of the state judiciary to continue upholding justice and fairness, assured Ogun residents of speedy dispensation of justice. She stated further that the judiciary is embracing technological reforms to improve efficiency.

A legal luminary, Moruf Ajibola (SAN), who is the Proprietor of Crescent University, Abeokuta, in his keynote, bemoaned the many accusations of corruption and judicial indiscipline against judicial officers, which, he agreed had affected public confidence and trust in the Nigerian judiciary in recent years. He noted that once the appointment process of a judge is faulty, the integrity of the judges had been traded away.

“For judicial appointments, who you know, state of origin, religion and cultural blocs are the leading unspoken criteria above impartiality posture. These are sterling qualities that win the confidence of the masses that have been trashed due to political and tribal interference and integrity and knowledge have been relegated to the background,” he said.

Ajibola said that while it is not bad to appoint friends or family members as judges, it is crucial to provide them an equal opportunity to compete or take part in an open and honest process.

Earlier in his remarks, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, appealed to judges, young lawyers and aspiring judicial officers to avoid being swayed by party interests, emphasising the need for them to maintain their objectivity and bravery, particularly as another election cycle draws near.
