The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, has charged members of the NBA Prosecution Team at the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee to uphold the highest standards of ethics, discipline and professional accountability in the discharge of their duties.

Osigwe gave the charge while attending a two-day residential training programme organised for members of the NBA Prosecution Team at the LPDC, themed “Understanding the LPDC Framework and Prosecutorial Mandate.”

The training was designed to strengthen the capacity of prosecutors entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing ethical standards within the legal profession and ensuring that disciplinary proceedings remain credible, efficient and fair.

Addressing participants, the NBA President commended members of the Prosecution Team for accepting to serve in what he described as a critical and demanding role. He noted that functioning as a prosecutor before the LPDC goes beyond administrative duty, describing it as a profound professional obligation that requires integrity, courage and a strong commitment to the sanctity of the Bar.

He emphasised that the LPDC remains one of the most important institutions within the legal profession, serving as the guardian of professional conduct and a mechanism for preserving public confidence in lawyers.

According to him, discipline within the profession is not punitive for its own sake but essential to maintaining the credibility, dignity and continued relevance of legal practice.

Osigwe expressed confidence that the training would equip the prosecution team with greater clarity, focus and resolve in handling disciplinary matters. He disclosed that a significant number of petitions had already been received by the Association and stressed the need for diligent, fair and expeditious handling of such cases.

He added that timely and decisive action in disciplinary proceedings sends a strong message that ethical compliance is fundamental to legal practice and not optional.

The NBA President further reminded participants that the strength of any profession lies in its ability to regulate itself effectively. He warned that where disciplinary processes are weak or delayed, public trust in the profession is eroded, but where discipline is firm, transparent and principled, the integrity of the profession is preserved.

He assured the prosecution team of the full support of the NBA leadership in ensuring that they are adequately equipped to carry out their mandate effectively.

The training programme forms part of the NBA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen internal accountability mechanisms, reinforce professional ethics and uphold the standards of the legal profession in Nigeria.

Osigwe reiterated that through the LPDC, the Bar must not only demand justice for society but also demonstrate a strong commitment to justice and accountability within its own ranks.
