Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has said it is reviewing recent social media posts attributed to Nigerian-born academic Dr Uju Anya, describing the posts as “hostile and threatening” amid mounting online criticism.

The controversy intensified after an X user, @TheWuhanClan, circulated screenshots and details of an exchange involving Anya, including a response attributed to her in which she allegedly told the user, “Die first, white man, then ask yourself why I’m dancing.”
The exchange followed the user’s reference to a February 2021 post in which Anya had celebrated the death of conservative American radio host Rush Limbaugh, writing: “Rush Limbaugh finally did something positive in life by dropping dead. Good Riddance to bad rubbish.”
Responding to the growing controversy, Carnegie Mellon University said Anya was currently on voluntary professional leave and was not teaching courses on campus during the academic year.
“We are deeply concerned by recent hostile and threatening social media posts by Dr. Anya and are reviewing this matter closely,” the university said.
The institution subsequently clarified that the posts did not represent its position and were contrary to its standards.
“To be clear: These posts incorrectly imply our university’s endorsement and are contrary to our community standards and values as well as our commitment to fostering a safe, respectful and welcoming campus community,” Carnegie Mellon stated.
Anya’s X account later became inaccessible following the backlash. However, it could not be independently confirmed whether she deactivated the account herself or whether it became unavailable for another reason.
The X user involved in the dispute accused Anya of making a death threat and criticised the university for what the user considered a failure to discipline her over previous remarks.
The controversy also drew the attention of X owner Elon Musk, who highlighted Anya’s position at Carnegie Mellon while reacting to discussion surrounding the posts.
The university, however, did not identify all the social media posts it was reviewing or specifically confirm whether the circulated screenshot containing the “Die first, white man” remark was among them. It also did not announce that Anya had been suspended, dismissed or subjected to any other disciplinary sanction.
Anya is an associate professor of second-language acquisition in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics. As of the time of the report, she had not publicly responded to the university’s statements or the latest controversy.
The development is not Anya’s first controversy over social media remarks. In September 2022, she faced global criticism after posting comments about Queen Elizabeth II shortly before the monarch’s death, including a statement wishing that her pain be “excruciating.”
Anya later explained that her anger towards the British monarchy was rooted in her family’s experiences during the Nigerian Civil War, claiming that Britain supported the Nigerian side and that members of her family were killed during the conflict.
Her 2022 comments also attracted criticism from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, while some Nigerians, including actor Yul Edochie, defended her position.
