As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on June 12, former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb(UK), has called for a collective recommitment to the core values of democratic governance, urging the nation to move beyond ceremonial observance towards genuine democratic practice.
In a stirring message shared to commemorate the day, Akangbe stated that democracy must not remain a theoretical ideal but a binding promise—that every voice matters, every vote counts, and power must reside with the people, not a privileged few.
“But we must tell ourselves the truth,” he said. “Too often, our elections do not reflect the will of the people. Too often, the courts are forced to do what ballots should have done. This is not only unfair—it is unjust!”
He lamented a growing culture where electoral outcomes are increasingly determined in courtrooms rather than at polling units, undermining public trust in the democratic process.
Akangbe stressed the need to uphold integrity over desperation and to cultivate democracy as a living culture, not a once-a-year ritual. “We owe our children and youths a better Nigeria. One where democracy is not ceremonial, but a culture,” he said.
He concluded with a call to action for all Nigerians: “Let us make democracy real—together. Happy Democracy Day.”
