The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the admissions deadline for public universities in the 2025/2026 academic session from October 31 to November 17, citing unforeseen disruptions, while issuing a strong warning against tertiary institutions accused of coercing high-ranking candidates into switching programmes through unauthorized channels.

In a statement signed by JAMB’s Public Communications Adviser, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the Board explained that the extension was prompted by two key developments. First, a court order disrupted the admission process until its lifting on October 28, following an appeal from the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU). Second, the National Universities Commission (NUC) accredited 229 new academic programmes across 37 universities on October 29, necessitating revised admission planning for these courses.

The original deadline was set during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions held on July 18, chaired by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, to allow private universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation enterprise institutions to finalize their processes before the national cut-off date of December 31.

“In light of these developments, and to ensure fairness and inclusiveness, the Board hereby extends the deadline for the completion of 2025 public university admissions to Monday, 17th November, 2025,” the statement read. JAMB emphasized that this new date is final and binding, commending institutions that met the initial timeline while urging full compliance to maintain transparency and support national education goals.

In a related move to safeguard the integrity of the process, JAMB condemned unethical practices by some institutions allegedly pressuring top candidates identified through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to abandon their preferred programmes for less competitive ones via internal school portals. Describing the practice as a “deliberate attempt to distort the merit-based admission process,” the Board reiterated that all changes must occur exclusively through CAPS to uphold accountability and fairness.

Preliminary investigations have identified a university in the South-West and another in Abuja as culprits, with regulatory actions already underway. “Candidates are strongly advised to ignore any invitation or request to change programmes through institutional portals or unofficial channels,” Dr. Benjamin warned. He added that candidates who comply with such pressures and later make adjustments via CAPS will be deemed to have acted voluntarily, thereby absolving JAMB of any consequences.

The Board’s dual announcements underscore its commitment to a “seamless, transparent, and credible” system that respects institutional autonomy while prioritizing qualified candidates. As the extended window opens, JAMB urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to its guidelines to ensure an equitable 2025 admission cycle.
