A lawyer and human rights activist, Kayode Ajulo, has demanded the release on bail of a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, from incarceration, as ordered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja. He stated that the Federal Government could not obey court orders selectively, stressing that the failure of the government to obey past six court orders granting Dasuki bail was a threat to the nation’s democracy. Ajulo, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, appealed to the Nigeria Bar Association to boycott the courts and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to resign his position if the government failed to obey the latest court order. According to him, it is an irony that the government finds it expedient to obey the Supreme Court judgment on the Nigerian Football Federation after a long hesitation, but not on Dasuki. The lawyer said President Muhammadu Buhari had failed to uphold the vow he made during his swearing-in where he said the executive under his watch would not encroach on the duties and functions of the legislative and judicial arms of government. “Three years down the line, this solemn vow seems to have been kept in the breach as the Presidency, the Federal Executive in Nigeria has obviously disregarded and discountenanced with impunity any ruling or judgment of the court which appears not to suit its purpose. “It is in this regard that I hope that the President Buhari-led executive will give regard to, comply with and, without fail, obey the latest court order/ruling delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu on the bail of a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, and other court rulings, orders and judgments seeking compliance by the Federal Government,” the statement said. Ajulo noted that if Dasuki, who is part of the elite, could be treated with impunity, there was no guarantee that other Nigerians who were granted reprieve by the courts to the dissatisfaction of the government would be allowed their liberty as granted by the courts. “Therefore, if the Executive fails to honour the bail order by Justice Ojukwu within seven days of fulfillment of the bail condition as stipulated by the court, I appeal to the Nigeria Bar Association to boycott the courts and urge the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to resign his position in the circumstance,” he stated. Should the NBA fail to see the threat disobedience of court orders posed to democracy and heed his appeal, the lawyer pledged to boycott the courts and also “galvanise like minds in this regard to show that Nigeria is not a Banana Republic where the government can pick and choose which court order to obey or disobey.”]]>
