The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Hon. Bernard Udemezue, the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for three months over a social media post deemed “damaging content” by the House.
Udemezue, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had shared details online alleging that his constituency, Ayamelum, was being marginalised in the allocation of constituency allowances.
He disclosed that each lawmaker receives N7.5 million quarterly, later increased to N10 million, emphasizing that the funds are intended for public use and not personal enrichment. He argued that citizens have the right to know how public funds are allocated and spent.
Reacting to Udemezue’s post, the House first passed a resolution to summon him during plenary last Tuesday. The matter was raised as one of urgent public importance by Hon. Tony Muobike, representing Aguata 2 Constituency, and seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Jude Ngobili, representing Ihiala 1 Constituency.
Presiding over the plenary, Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze referred the matter to the House Committee on Rules, Businesses, Ethics, and Privileges for investigation. The committee reported back during Tuesday’s plenary, leading the House to pass a resolution suspending Udemezue for three months.
The suspension highlights the ongoing tension between lawmakers and the Assembly over the disclosure of constituency allowances and transparency in governance.
