The Nigerian Bar Association, Kano Branch, has criticised the Kano State Police Command over its alleged refusal to obey a court order directing the immediate release of a detained lawyer, Ahmad Tijjani Miko.

The Chairman of the branch, Usman Umar Fari, raised the concern in a statement issued on Thursday, describing the alleged action of the police as a direct affront to the rule of law and the authority of the court.
According to Fari, the Kano State High Court had ordered the immediate release of Miko in a case filed against the Commissioner of Police and three others.
He alleged that despite the order being duly served on the Commissioner of Police, the lawyer remained in custody after being detained for seven consecutive days without being charged to court.
Fari said the conduct of the police was disturbing, especially because security agencies are expected to protect the law, not disregard it.
“When those who are paid by taxpayers to enforce the law become the frontline violators of the law, the fabric of civil society is fundamentally threatened,” he said.
“This flagrant disobedience is not just a violation of the detained legal practitioner’s fundamental human rights; it is a direct assault on the judiciary and a dangerous invitation to anarchy.”
The NBA chairman said respect for court orders is the foundation of any democratic society, warning that public confidence in the justice system would be weakened if law enforcement agencies disregard judicial decisions.
He added that the police cannot demand obedience to the law from citizens while allegedly refusing to comply with lawful orders of court.
Fari stressed that the police must operate within the limits of the Constitution and the rule of law at all times.
The NBA Kano Branch therefore called for the immediate and unconditional release of Ahmad Tijjani Miko in line with the order of the court.
