The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ruled to void the election of Senator Ishaku Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This ruling comes after a legal battle that saw the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Senator Abbo and issue the same document to Rev. Amos Yohanna Kumai, a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The controversy began when Senator Abbo was declared the winner of the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election by INEC. Despite securing the highest number of votes in the polls, his victory was contested by Rev. Amos Yohanna, who challenged the results on the grounds of irregularities. Yohanna’s initial appeal was dismissed by the election tribunal, leading to his further appeal to the Court of Appeal.

In its recent ruling, the Court of Appeal upheld Yohanna’s appeal and set aside Senator Abbo’s election due to non-compliance with electoral guidelines. Consequently, Rev. Amos Yohanna Kumai is now officially recognized as the validly elected senator for Adamawa North, having garnered the second-highest number of votes in the election that nullified Senator Abbo’s victory.

Responding to the court’s decision, Senator Abbo took to his verified Facebook page and stated, “The Court of Appeal in Abuja just voided my election. The gang up has temporarily worked. I will soon address the press.”

This ruling marks a significant turn of events in the political landscape, altering the representation of Adamawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly. Senator Abbo is widely known for his involvement in a highly publicized incident in which he physically assaulted a nursing mother at an Abuja sex toy shop, an event that drew significant public attention and condemnation.
