The Magistrate Court I sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has granted bail to a civil servant, Mr. Ikenna Ezeume, who is facing charges of cyberbullying and defamation.

Ezeume was arraigned on Friday on a two-count charge in the case marked MAN/336/C, titled Inspector General of Police v. Ikenna Ezeume. He pleaded not guilty before Senior Magistrate O. N. Ike.
Defense counsel, A. C. Nwogbo, Esq., moved an oral bail application, urging the court to exercise its discretion in favour of the defendant.
But the prosecution counsel, Barrister Okongwu Jideofor, objected, alleging that Ezeume continued to publish statements related to the matter on social media while investigations were still ongoing. He argued that granting bail could allow the defendant to persist in making defamatory or prejudicial posts.
In reply, Nwogbo refuted the claim, insisting that his client was never invited by Zone 13 Police Command and that the allegations lacked merit. He added that the court could impose conditions preventing further online publications.
After considering the arguments, Magistrate Ike admitted Ezeume to bail in the sum of ₦1,000,000 with one reliable surety. The court ordered the defendant to refrain from posting any further material on social media concerning the case, or risk being remanded in custody.
During the proceedings, Ezeume accused the complainant, Jideofor, of recording a video of him while he stood in the dock. The complainant denied filming. The magistrate warned that if any such video or image surfaced online, Jideofor would be held in contempt of court.
The matter was adjourned to November 17 for continuation of hearing.
