Renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Kunle Edun, has challenged reports attributing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a statement that there is no corruption in Nigeria, describing such claims as a “half-truth.”
Speaking on the pervasive issue of corruption in the country, Edun said during an interview that corruption remains endemic across most sectors of public life and the economy. “Corruption is entrenched at both the Federal and State civil service. One cannot get anything done without being asked to facilitate the public service he desires,” he stated.
He enumerated areas where corruption persists, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), government ministries and agencies, budget padding, inflated legislative remunerations, as well as the police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the judiciary.
Edun noted that although the identification of a problem is the first step toward solving it, the fight against corruption appears to have slowed. He criticized the perceived leniency toward politically exposed persons and civil servants alleged to have looted public funds, noting that investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) often fail to result in substantial accountability. “EFCC now engages in embarrassing plea bargains. It is like telling looters to steal much, return little, and enjoy the remaining loot,” he said.
On the judiciary, Edun argued that corruption cases drag on for years, with some convictions resulting in light or laughable sentences. He warned that politics in Nigeria has become an industry where newcomers can amass wealth in a short time without visible means of livelihood, emphasizing that “almost everyone now lives on corruption.”
Addressing the President directly, Edun said, “Mr. President, I disagree with you. Let us not deodorize our smell just to look good outside. We must take positive steps to deal with corruption without fear or favor. That is the best way to market Nigeria and foster growth.”
He added that foreign trading partners, with embassies in Nigeria, are aware of the realities on the ground, underscoring the urgency of genuine anti-corruption efforts.
