A violent confrontation broke out between supporters of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, intensifying the ongoing emirship dispute rocking the Kano Emirate Council.
The clash reportedly occurred as Aminu Ado Bayero was returning from a condolence visit to the family of the late Aminu Dantata, passing through the Kofar Kudu palace area currently occupied by Sanusi.
Supporters from both camps have exchanged accusations over the incident. In a statement released by Sadam Yakasai on behalf of the Kano Emirate Media Team, Bayero’s supporters were accused of forcefully breaching the palace gate, assaulting palace guards, injuring some, and vandalizing police vehicles within the premises.
Yakasai stated, “His hoodlums breached the security of Gidan Rumfa. They broke the gate and attacked the guards, injuring some of them. They smashed police vehicles stationed at the palace. The deposed Emir deliberately passed through Emir’s Palace Road instead of taking the proper route, with the intention of intimidating residents.”
The statement described Bayero’s recent actions as “a clear case of aggression and desperation,” highlighting that this was the first time he had taken his fight directly to Gidan Rumfa while residing securely at Nassarawa Palace.
However, Muktar Dahiru, an eyewitness and member of Bayero’s entourage, refuted these claims. He said the clash was between unknown miscreants and Bayero’s supporters near Kofar Kudu Palace.
Dahiru explained, “We were returning from a condolence visit when some hoodlums blocked the road in front of the palace, armed with dangerous weapons. Our supporters confronted them, cleared the way, and Emir Bayero passed through safely.”
The confrontation prompted police intervention, with officers dispersing the hoodlums using tear gas.
The Kano State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the altercation and announced that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has established a panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
