The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, has expressed profound condolences to the family of the retired Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON, who passed away today at the age of 71.

In a press release issued by Ahmed Gambo Saleh, Esq., Secretary, His Lordship commiserated with the family and the people of Bauchi State over the loss of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria and former Chairman of the NJC, noting that although death is a painful reality, the nation takes comfort in the legacy of hard work, honesty, and dedication left behind by the late jurist.

Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON, who would have turned 72 on December 31, 2025, was a devout Muslim and a widely respected jurist known for his courage and adherence to the highest ideals of the Bench. He served on the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 2006 to 2022 and as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his resignation in June 2022 due to ill health.

His distinguished career began after he was called to the Bar in 1981. In 1989, he was appointed Chief Magistrate of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, a role he held until 1991, before joining the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1993, later ascending to the Supreme Court and ultimately the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria.

On behalf of the entire Judiciary, the CJN extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the people and government of Bauchi State, the immediate family of the late former CJN, the Nigerian Judiciary, and the entire legal community, praying that Almighty Allah grants the late Justice Tanko Muhammad and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
