The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Simon Ortuanya, has appointed renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as a visiting professor of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor also appointed Prof. Kevin Urama, an executive at the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Prof. James Robinson of the University of Chicago as visiting professors.

This was contained in a statement issued in Nsukka on Wednesday and signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of UNN, Mr. Inya Egwu.

According to the statement, the appointments, dated December 18 and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, are part of the Ortuanya administration’s drive to position the university on the global academic stage.

It stated that the appointment letters outlined the roles and expectations of visiting professors to include teaching engagements, research collaboration, mentorship, and strategic academic interactions, among others.

Adichie, described as one of the most influential literary voices in the world, was appointed in recognition of her outstanding contributions to literature, creative writing, and global intellectual discourse.

“Her visiting professorship will enrich the arts and humanities through lectures, scholarly engagements, and mentorship of students and young academics,” the statement said.

Prof. Urama, a renowned development economist and senior official of the African Development Bank, was appointed in view of his extensive expertise in development economics, climate policy, and evidence-based policymaking.

“His engagement is expected to strengthen teaching, research, and policy-oriented programmes, particularly in economics, development studies, and related disciplines,” it added.

Prof. Robinson, a political economist at the University of Chicago, is globally recognised for his work on institutions, governance, and economic development.

The statement noted that the visiting professors are expected to deepen academic collaboration, advance research, and expose students and lecturers to cutting-edge global scholarship in political economy and development studies.

It added that the appointments align with the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to attracting eminent global scholars and industry leaders to UNN, in line with the vision of the university’s founding fathers.

“UNN was founded to be a globally competitive institution, and these appointments represent a significant step towards reclaiming that legacy and enhancing its global relevance,” the statement said.

Recall that Adichie attended UNN, where she studied medicine for about one and a half years before moving to the United States for further education.
