As Nigeria marked Children’s Day, legal luminary Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, issued a powerful message urging political leaders to move beyond pageantry and take concrete steps to protect and empower children across the country.

In a statement titled “#ChildrensDay: Time for Action, Not Optics”, Akangbe declared that true celebration lies not in balloons or fanfare but in sincere leadership and impactful policies.

“Children don’t need staged photo-ops; they need sincere leadership that secures their future through quality education, healthcare, safety, and opportunity,” he said.

He condemned what he described as performative displays by leaders, highlighting the contradiction in commemorating Children’s Day while enacting or tolerating policies that mortgage children’s futures.

“It is hypocrisy for those in power to mark Children’s Day while enacting or tolerating policies that mortgage their future,” he stated.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria called on policymakers to prioritise intentional action over empty gestures, adding that children deserve a Nigeria where they can thrive—not just survive.

“Let’s build a future where every child thrives, not survives,” he concluded.
