The Nigerian Army has refuted claims circulating on social media platforms alleging that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, passed away due to cancer in an undisclosed hospital overseas.

The reports, which originated from an X (formerly Twitter) user named Jackson Ude, suggested that Lagbaja’s death had been kept under wraps for nearly 48 hours due to intense lobbying by some top army generals vying for the position.

However, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, has dismissed these claims as “false” and clarified that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is currently on leave. In his absence, the Army Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, will serve as the acting Chief of Army Staff.

Ude’s post on X had claimed, “CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF DIES OF CANCER. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has died. Lagbaja died in an undisclosed hospital overseas nearly 48 hours ago from stage three cancer, according to a senior government official.” The post further alleged that the news of Lagbaja’s death was being kept secret due to lobbying by generals seeking to succeed him.

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed as the 27th Chief of Army Staff by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023. The Nigerian Army has urged the public to disregard the false reports and emphasized that the Chief of Army Staff is on leave, with Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim assuming the role in an acting capacity during his absence.
