CEILING FOR ELECTION EXPENSES IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, the maximum election expenses to be incurred by candidates are as follows:

(1) PRESIDENTIAL – N1 BILLION
(2) GUBERNATORIAL – N200 MILLION
(3) SENATORIAL- N40 MILLION
(4) HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES-20 MILLION.
(5) STATE ASSEMBLY – N10 MILLION

PENALTY
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE – Imprisonment for 12 months or fine of 1,000,000 or both.

GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE-Imprisonment for 9 months or fine of N800,000 or both.

SENATORIAL CANDIDATE Imprisonment for 6 months or fine of N600,000 or both

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CANDIDATES: Imprisonment for 5 months or fine of N500,000 or both

STATE ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE: Imprisonment for 3months or fine of N300,000 or both.

In 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari declined assent to a Bill passed by the National Assembly seeking to review the strictures for election expenses in Nigeria.

Other items in the stalled Bill include; Sequence of Election, and the proposition of E-voting in Nigeria. etc
