Canada has increased the minimum amount international students must demonstrate for living expenses when applying for study permits, with the new requirement taking effect on September 1, 2026.

Under the revised rules, an applicant intending to study in any Canadian province or territory outside Quebec must show at least C$23,448 to cover living expenses for one year.
The amount does not include tuition fees or transportation costs to and from Canada, which applicants must demonstrate that they can also afford without depending on employment in the country.
The new figure represents an increase of C$553 from the C$22,895 required for applications submitted between January 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026.
Canada’s immigration authorities said the financial requirement is reviewed annually to reflect changes in the cost of living.
The amount applicants must provide rises according to the number of accompanying family members.
A family of two will be required to demonstrate C$29,192, while a family of three must show C$35,888.
The requirement increases to C$43,572 for four people, C$49,419 for five, C$55,736 for six and C$62,054 for seven.
Applicants must add C$6,318 for every additional family member beyond seven.
Consequently, an international student travelling with two family members will need to demonstrate at least C$35,888 for one year’s living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation.
The revised amounts apply only to study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026. Applications submitted before that date will be assessed using the existing financial thresholds.
Applicants must provide credible documents showing that the required funds are readily available to them.
Acceptable evidence may include proof of tuition and accommodation payments, Canadian bank account statements, guaranteed investment certificates, education loans, scholarships, letters from financial sponsors and bank statements covering the previous six months.
Applicants from countries with foreign exchange restrictions may also be required to show that they are permitted to transfer the money out of their country.
Students enrolling in programmes lasting longer than one year must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds for the first year and explain how they intend to finance the remainder of their studies.
Such evidence could include a multi-year scholarship, sponsorship arrangement or proof of a parent’s or sponsor’s continuing income.
The revised federal requirement does not apply to Quebec, which operates separate financial standards for international students through its provincial immigration system.
