Nigerian musician Beautiful Nubia, born Segun Akinlolu, has accused gospel singers Yinka Ayefele and Bakare Boluwatife Oluwatobi (BBO) of using melodies from his song “Seven Lives” without crediting him.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, Beautiful Nubia alleged that Ayefele used his melody for “Igbagbo Ireti,” while BBO did the same in his song “Amin.”

“There was Yinka Ayefele with ‘My Faith in God’ (Igbagbo Ireti) in 2012, and now someone called BBO with ‘Amin’ this year. Both stole their melodies from our original song ‘Seven Lives,’” he said.

“Seven Lives,” one of Beautiful Nubia’s earlier works, is known for its distinctive melody blending traditional Nigerian rhythms with modern arrangements.

He stressed that taking another person’s creative work without acknowledgment is wrong.

“Stealing is stealing; it has no other name. Well, you could call it thievery,” he added.

He further questioned when Nigerians, particularly gospel musicians, would learn to respect copyright.

Reacting to the allegations in a chat with Peoples Gazette, Ayefele questioned the scope of copyright claims in music.

“Can one claim a melody or claim copyright on lyrics and compositions? Can you claim a tone on the keyboard or guitar as exclusively yours?” he asked.

He added that he does not respond to what he described as “social media stunts,” noting that elements such as melody or instrumental tones are not easily owned.

Ayefele’s general manager, Wuyi Aderibigbe, also declined further comment, stating that if there was any copyright infringement, the appropriate legal steps should be taken.

BBO had not responded to our correspondent’s request for comment as of the time of filing this report.
