Ichor Tersagh, a visiting lecturer at Benue State University (BSU), has responded to a viral video that shows him hitting a man who entered his lecture hall during a class on Friday, July 12th. The video sparked outrage on social media, with many viewers accusing Tersagh of assault.
In a Facebook post, Tersagh explained that the incident occurred while he was teaching a soil microbiology course to 300 level students in a large lecture theater. He said the hall is often disrupted by students and traders passing through for various reasons, which can obstruct the lecture and distract both the lecturer and students.
According to Tersagh, he had asked people to stop walking through the front of the classroom where he was teaching and instead use the back of the hall. He said the man in the video refused to comply and jokingly, Tersagh gave him what he called a “baptism of sense with some knocks.”
Tersagh claims the video was edited to remove parts showing the jokes and laughter, giving the false impression of an assault. He also alleges the man had previously approached him twice with offers to help students cheat in exchange for money, which Tersagh refused.
The lecturer called on university authorities to restrict trade and hawking in and around lecture halls. He also said students should be required to wear ID cards to help security and lecturers properly identify them.
The identity of the man in the video remains unknown and the university has not yet commented on the incident. The full circumstances around the altercation captured on video are still unclear.
