Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb (UK) and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, has strongly condemned the brutal treatment of Ms. Jennifer Elobor, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Anambra State.

In a statement, Akangbe described the viral video showing Elobor being beaten and humiliated as “heartbreaking and unlawful,” stressing that no civilized society should tolerate such acts.

“The Nigerian Constitution guarantees the dignity of the human person and the right to fair hearing. These safeguards exist to protect citizens from exactly the kind of abuse Jennifer suffered. When security operatives ignore these protections and resort to jungle justice, they undermine not just the victim, but the rule of law itself,” he said.

Akangbe noted that the perpetrators were identified as members of a local vigilante group, but emphasized that similar or worse abuses are often carried out by regular security personnel across Nigeria, many of which go unreported. He warned that such incidents erode public trust in institutions and constitute a “deeper culture of impunity” that must be addressed.

Highlighting the implications for the nation’s youth, he said, “How do we expect our young people to have faith in this country if those in uniform, or in any position of authority, brutalize them instead of protecting them? It is unfair, unjust, and sends a dangerous message to the next generation.”

While commending the Anambra State Government for arresting the perpetrators, Akangbe emphasized that accountability must follow. “Arrest alone is not enough. These officers must be prosecuted and held responsible. Justice for Jennifer is justice for all of us,” he stated.

He further called on security agencies to adopt a reform-oriented approach when dealing with young people accused of offenses, especially internet-related crimes, urging authorities to redirect their talents into lawful and productive activities rather than destroying their potential.

“Law enforcement must never be about intimidation or violence. It must be about service, professionalism, and respect for human rights. A society that brutalizes its young people sabotages its own future,” Akangbe concluded.
