The Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, has called for synergy among the states in the North-East in the fight against insurgency.

Yahaya made this appeal in his remarks in Gombe on Thursday during the inaugural meeting of the North-East Governors Forum.

He noted that the region was backward in the country, following the activities of the insurgents, who had also killed thousands of people and rendered many homeless.

“We need to take up the challenges. We are one people; poverty, hunger and agony have no eyes.

“Our region has been affected by desert encroachment, which is having a negative impact on our people.

“We need to prevent the situation posing threat to our people, hence the need for a concerted effort.”

The governor stressed the need for his counterparts to monitor donor agencies and ensure that they provide the much-needed intervention to the people.

He maintained that the establishment of the North-East Development Commission was timely, as he urged his counterparts to coordinate their actions properly, to avoid the shortcomings of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“I’m calling on the NEDC to execute projects with immediate impact on the public,” he said.

Yahaya added that the discovery of hydrocarbon in the region would create job opportunities for the people, but said the development must be properly handled to avoid the Niger Delta experience.

All the North-East governors, except the Governor of Taraba State, who was represented by his deputy, Haruna Manu, attended the meeting.
