The name of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has been removed from the national campaign council list of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming November 11 governorship election.

Wike, a former two-term governor under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was appointed as a minister by President Bola Tinubu, for whom he actively campaigned during the February election.

The list of campaign teams, which is yet to be officially inaugurated, was made public on Tuesday and signed by the National Organising Secretary of the APC, Suleiman Mohammed Argungu.

However, the inclusion of Wike’s name as a member of the council stirred controversy, as he is associated with the opposition party. Criticism mounted against the APC for having a prominent opposition figure on its list.

In response to the public outcry, the APC swiftly issued a disclaimer, urging party members and Nigerians to disregard the circulated list. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, released a statement clarifying that the list was not an official party document.

The original list reportedly named Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, as the Chairman of the Bayelsa State National Campaign Council, alongside other prominent APC members. However, this list was disclaimed as unofficial.

Wike’s recent foray into the APC sparked speculation about his political affiliations and future intentions. Although his nomination as a ministerial candidate was met with controversy, Wike asserted that his move was endorsed by the PDP’s national leadership.

Wike addressed the situation, stating, “Before this appointment came, I wrote to the national party chairman, minority leader of the House of Representatives and Senate, zonal chairman of the party, my state chairman, and my governor. All of them wrote to me back: ‘Accept it’. I have it documented.”
