Dr. M. Onyekachi Ubani, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Special Adviser on Legal and Constitutional Matters to the President of the Senate, has strongly condemned a recent publication by Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, describing it as “baseless, defamatory, and malicious.”
The publication, titled “Open Letter to BOSAN: BOSAN Should Avoid the Appearance of Selective Justice – Is Ozekhome the Only Erring SAN that Has Caused National or International Embarrassment to Nigeria? What About the International Embarrassment Caused to Nigeria by the Duo of Malami and Monday Ubani?” and dated 7 October 2025, allegedly attacked Dr. Ubani’s professional integrity.
In a statement released to the media, Dr. Ubani dismissed the claims, saying, “At no time have I ever been cited for contempt by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako or any court in Nigeria. The allegation that I was sanctioned, queried, or reprimanded in connection with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s matter is an outright fabrication, without a single judicial record to support it.”
Dr. Ubani further highlighted that Dr. Jaja, who claims to be the “leader of 1,000 legislative lawyers,” is unknown to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), or any recognised legal institution. He noted that all official legal engagements of the Senate are conducted through lawful institutional channels and strictly documented procedures.
The SAN emphasized that he has never engaged or presented Dr. Sandra Duru (a.k.a. Prof. Mgbeke) as a principal witness in any legal matter, dismissing Dr. Jaja’s allegations as “pure fantasy and malicious distortions.”
Announcing the next steps, Dr. Ubani said his legal team has been instructed to:
- Petition the Inspector-General of Police to investigate Dr. Jaja for cyberstalking and criminal defamation under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015; and
- Commence civil proceedings for libel and injurious falsehood to seek appropriate damages and injunctive relief.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Ubani highlighted his decades of service to the legal profession, including roles as Former 2nd Vice President of the NBA, Past Chairman of NBA Ikeja Branch, Past Chairman of SPIDEL, and current Chairman of the NBA Committee on Electoral Reform. He stressed that he has never faced disciplinary action before BOSAN or the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
Dr. Ubani concluded by urging BOSAN, the legal community, and the general public to disregard Dr. Jaja’s publication, describing it as “the product of malice, envy, and intellectual bankruptcy,” and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the rule of law, professional ethics, and the dignity of the legal profession.
