Barring any last-minute changes, the anti-Tinubu coalition of opposition leaders has finalised plans to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its new political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. Former Senate President David Mark has reportedly agreed to serve as the Interim National Chairman of the party, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The coalition, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, ex-Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, reached a consensus following months of high-level negotiations.

Sources close to the coalition revealed that although the position of National Secretary remains unresolved—with Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Ben Obi declining the offer—a consensus is expected soon. A formal unveiling of the coalition under the ADC banner is anticipated later this week.

Current ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu confirmed that the party has been in transition for over 18 months in preparation for a national repositioning.

Speaking with journalists, Nwosu described David Mark as “one of the most disciplined and detribalised Nigerians” and “the kind of leadership we want to showcase.” He expressed his willingness to step down, stating, “To me, Nigeria comes first… I am ready to sacrifice for the country.”

Nwosu said the coalition aims to bring together credible leaders who prioritise the country’s progress over partisan interests.

“What we are doing is beyond politics and power grabbing… If David Mark agrees to lead, he’s the best man for the job.”

According to sources, integration of coalition loyalists into the ADC has already begun. In states like Anambra and the FCT, individuals previously affiliated with the PDP, LP, and APC are reportedly contesting under the ADC umbrella.

A key coalition member said the decision to adopt the ADC came after it became clear that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was unlikely to register any new parties soon.

“We are all leaving our former parties for ADC. The current ADC leadership has agreed to step aside for us. This is a rescue mission,” one coalition source said.

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, confirmed Peter Obi’s willingness to leave the Labour Party if necessary.

“If joining a new platform will help rescue Nigeria, Peter Obi is ready. His focus is on poverty alleviation, security, and economic reform,” said Tanko.

Reacting to the development, Bala Ibrahim, Director of Publicity for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissed the opposition movement as inconsequential.

“ADC is not a platform that can fly… We have beaten them before, and we’ll do it again in 2027.”

He cited the rejection of leadership roles by Aregbesola and Ben Obi as a sign that the coalition is already faltering.

According to multiple insiders, a key meeting is scheduled in Abuja on Wednesday to finalise the transition and fill unresolved positions. A formal announcement and the unveiling of the coalition under the ADC platform are expected before the week ends.

If confirmed, this strategic alignment could reshape the opposition’s electoral strategy heading into 2027, presenting a united front for the first time in years. The coming days may determine whether the ADC can serve as a credible alternative to the ruling APC.
