At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon-branded cargo aircraft overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport and crashed into vehicles before coming to rest in a field beside the airport.

The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air as Flight 7598, was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday when it overran Runway 30, according to officials.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the aircraft struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway before finally stopping in a field adjacent to the airport.
Five people were confirmed dead, while five others sustained injuries. Three of the injured were taken to a trauma centre in critical condition, while two others were transported to a local hospital.
Videos from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the wreckage as emergency personnel battled the fire.
Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raied Jadallah said the aircraft struck “a couple of vehicles” during the crash.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed that the flight was being operated by 21 Air and was coming in to land when the accident occurred.
“We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss,” Nantel said.
21 Air Chief Executive Officer Keith Winters also described the company as “devastated” by the crash and said it was cooperating with federal investigators.
“Our immediate priorities are supporting those affected, assisting the authorities, and ensuring that accurate information is communicated as it becomes available,” he said.
The crash prompted an immediate ground stop at Miami International Airport, with all runways and taxiways initially closed.
Two of the airport’s four runways were later reopened after 5 p.m., but the airport remained under a ground delay expected to continue into early Monday.
More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene, where firefighters battled what officials described as a “very complex fire” involving burning engine compartments.
Search-and-rescue teams were also deployed to retrieve the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped inside the aircraft, while technical rescue personnel carried out complex extrications for people trapped in vehicles struck by the plane.
Emergency crews were also dealing with an active fuel leak at the crash site.
Boeing said the aircraft was a 767-300 model originally delivered as a passenger jet in 1994 before being converted by a third party for cargo operations.
The aircraft manufacturer expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said it was supporting the investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team to investigate the accident, while the Federal Aviation Administration is also involved.
Authorities said the FAA and NTSB will determine the cause of the crash.
