The Office of the President of the Senate has explained why the wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Mrs Ekaette Akpabio, was inside the Senate chamber, saying the visit was for an inspection of faulty facilities and equipment following complaints from senators and National Assembly staff.

The clarification was made on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President of the Senate on Diaspora and NGOs, Dr Jibril Tafida, who dismissed reports suggesting that Mrs Akpabio had “unholy access” to the chamber.
According to Tafida, the visit was approved by the Senate President and deliberately scheduled for a Saturday so that it would not interfere with legislative activities.
He said complaints had been raised about the condition of some facilities in the chamber and concerns over the quality of work carried out by contractors, prompting the inspection.
Tafida said Mrs Akpabio was accompanied by engineers and technical experts, including specialists in electrical systems, information and communication technology, audio-visual equipment and building maintenance, who were invited to assess the reported faults.
He also rejected claims that the Senate President’s wife entered the chamber in the company of “marabouts” or other persons of questionable character, describing the reports as false and misleading.
“No security protocol was breached, and relevant officials were aware of the visit,” Tafida said.
He maintained that the exercise was carried out with the knowledge of the appropriate authorities and was intended to ascertain the state of facilities and equipment in the Senate chamber.
The aide criticised reports portraying the visit as suspicious, accusing those behind them of engaging in speculative journalism and urging media organisations and content creators to verify information before publication.
Tafida further said Mrs Akpabio was known for her philanthropic activities and integrity, while maintaining that the Senate President remained focused on his legislative responsibilities.
“The National Assembly remains secure and well managed,” he said.
When contacted for further clarification, Tafida reportedly declined to go beyond the statement but maintained that the Senate President’s office would not tolerate what he described as reckless reports targeting the Akpabio family.
