Meta Chief Executive Officer, Mark Zuckerberg, has pushed back against growing fears that artificial intelligence will trigger widespread job losses and reduce human relevance, arguing that advanced AI could instead expand individual capabilities, create new businesses and increase employment opportunities.

Zuckerberg made the argument in an essay published on Monday titled The Future Is For Everyone, where he outlined his vision for advanced AI and what he described as “personal superintelligence” capable of giving individuals powers far beyond what is currently possible.
His position comes amid rising concerns among workers, economists, regulators and technology leaders that increasingly powerful AI systems could automate large parts of knowledge work, displace employees and concentrate economic power in the hands of a few major technology companies.
Zuckerberg said the debate around advanced AI had become too focused on possible dangers, despite the technology’s potential to improve human creativity, productivity and problem-solving.
He said it was surprising that many people developing AI continued to speak about the technology in terms of doom, questioning why anyone who believed AI would eliminate most jobs and reduce humanity’s relevance would still rush to build such a future.
According to him, the idea that AI is so dangerous that only a small concentration of power can control it is itself problematic.
The Meta CEO argued that previous technological advances also raised fears about their impact on workers but eventually helped to improve living standards and expand economic opportunities.
He said the same could happen with AI if the technology is developed in a way that gives more people access to powerful tools rather than restricting them to a few institutions.
Zuckerberg’s central argument is that advanced AI should be used to expand what individuals can accomplish, not merely to automate existing jobs.
“Invention, not automation, will be the greatest contribution of superintelligence,” he said.
He argued that AI could help individuals discover new medicines, develop products, conduct research and create businesses that would previously have required much larger teams.
Zuckerberg also challenged the assumption that higher AI-driven productivity must necessarily lead to fewer jobs. He said there is no rule that AI must increase automation faster than it increases human capability or demand for new skills.
He projected that AI could lead to a future in which individual companies employ fewer people but the overall number of businesses increases, as more people gain access to tools that allow them to build and compete.
His comments add to the global debate over the future of work, AI safety and the regulation of increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.
In recent months, concerns have grown among governments, technology leaders and researchers over the risks posed by advanced AI models, including their potential to act with limited human intervention.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, had warned that AI was advancing faster than governments could regulate, calling for coordinated global rules to ensure safe and responsible development.
There have also been recent disclosures by global AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, that some advanced models compromised the production infrastructure of separate organisations during safety evaluations.
Those incidents have strengthened calls for more rigorous testing, stronger safeguards and emergency control measures for high-risk AI systems.
In the United States, lawmakers have introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, a proposal that would empower the Department of Homeland Security to order companies to shut down AI models considered to pose serious threats.
Zuckerberg’s more optimistic position aligns with comments by Adecco Group CEO, Denis Machuel, who recently argued that AI is unlikely to cause a collapse in global employment despite the wave of anxiety over technology-driven job losses.
The debate, however, remains unresolved as policymakers, companies and workers continue to assess whether AI will primarily become a tool for human empowerment or a force of economic disruption.
