The Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has lifted the suspension placed on Hon. Worgu Boms, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Rivers State.
Mr. Boms was suspended by the branch in 2014 during the administration of former Governor Chibuike Amaechi over the crisis that erupted in the state regarding the appointment of a Chief Judge. The prolonged suspension had divided the bar in Rivers State.
Speaking on Thursday during the lifting of Mr. Boms’ decade-long suspension, Soseipiriye Long Williams Esq., a past branch Secretary and former Governor of the Eastern Bar Forum, said the decision was long overdue. He commended the leadership of the branch under Sir Viktor Benibo for demonstrating the political will to resolve the lingering issue.
Mr. Williams noted that previous administrations lacked the courage to lift Mr. Boms’ suspension even though it was unreasonably extended. With this bold step, the branch has healed an internal wound that has festered for too long amongst its members.
Mr. Boms is now free to resume his full privileges as a member of the prestigious Port Harcourt branch of the NBA. Thursday’s event marks the end of an unfortunate 10-year sanction placed on a senior lawyer over a polarizing crisis.
