Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, the newly sworn-in President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has announced the establishment of a Local Governments Monitoring Committee to ensure strict compliance with the recent judgment of the Supreme Court on the financial independence and autonomy of Local Government Councils in Nigeria.

During his inaugural speech, Osigwe emphasized the NBA’s role as the watchdog of society and its commitment to the promotion and defense of the rule of law. He noted that the Supreme Court’s judgment unequivocally upheld the constitutional provisions granting financial autonomy to the 774 Local Governments in the country.

The Local Governments Monitoring Committee will be tasked with monitoring and ensuring that the relevant tiers of government fully comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment. The ultimate goal is to enhance good governance, deepen constitutional democracy, and promote the rule of law at the grassroots level.

Osigwe highlighted the NBA’s unique position, with branches spread across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, making it well-suited to effectively monitor the 774 Local Government Councils. He called upon all NBA branches nationwide to set up similar committees at the local level to support this initiative.

The Committee will be chaired by Adebayo Mutalubi Ojo, SAN, with Augustine Nwabueze Eseagu serving as the Secretary.

By establishing the Local Governments Monitoring Committee, the NBA President reaffirms the Association’s commitment to upholding the constitution, ensuring compliance with judicial pronouncements, and promoting good governance at all levels of the Nigerian federation.
