Fundamental right enforcement suit against Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer, Sini Omar John, came up for mention on Wednesday, before Justice Opensowu of Lagos state High Court.

In suit No: LD/11292MFHR/2021, between Chimezie Christian Onwudiwe V EFCC & Anor, initiated by Public Interest Litigation Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the claimant, had on the 10th of February, accused the Sectional Head of the Advanced Fee Fraud Section, Mr. Sini Omar John, of breach of his fundamental human right, abuse of his professional privilege, unlawful detention, unprovoked harassment and unwarranted humiliation in the presence of his client in Sini’s office.

When the matter was mentioned the defendants (EFCC) were not represented by any lawyer.

Justice Opensowu, therefore, ordered the Chairman of the Public Interest Litigation Committee of the NBA, Dr. Charles Mekwunye, who is Onwudiwe’s lawyer to ensure that the court processes are duly served on Mr. Sini Omar John and another defendant.

Dr. Mekwunyewho appeared with two other lawyers assured the court that the court processes would be served on the defendants on that day being 30th June 2021 or latest the next day.

Consequently, the matter was adjourned to 5th October 2021 for hearing.

Recall that Chimezie Christian Onwudiwe had on 15th February 2021, petitioned the Acting Chairman Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accusing Sini of invading his personal privacy, professional privileges and violated my fundamental human right when he coercively ordered him to unlock his phone or he would forcefully break into the mobile phone if he fails to obey his orders.

Onwudiwe also added that Sini took his time to go through all his phone calls, text messages, Whatsapp conversations and email communications with clients.
