Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has disclosed that about 500,000 people have been displaced from their homes in the state due to banditry and persistent violence.

The governor said the state government is taking steps to ensure the displaced residents are reunited with their families and eventually return to their communities.

Bago made the disclosure during a presidential initiative that distributed food, nutritional items and medical supplies to thousands of vulnerable residents affected by the humanitarian crisis in Borgu Local Government Area.

He explained that many of the displaced persons are currently scattered across neighbouring states, including Kebbi State, Kwara State, Kogi State and Kaduna State, as well as the Federal Capital Territory and the Benin Republic.

“Frantic efforts are in place to ensure these people return home soonest,” the governor said, adding that the state government is working closely with the federal government and development partners to address the situation.

Bago also revealed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate clearing of the Borgu National Park to make the area habitable and to establish permanent operational bases for security agencies.

According to the governor, the directive is aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for attacks that forced residents to abandon their villages and farmlands.

He appealed to residents of Borgu to remain patient, describing the federal food assistance as a demonstration of concern and an immediate intervention for families affected by the crisis.

The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, commended Bago for what he described as exemplary leadership and urged residents to remain calm while government efforts to restore security continue.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, praised the administration of President Tinubu for its swift response and acknowledged the governor’s commitment to restoring peace in the emirate.

Other officials, including Borgu Local Government Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir and the state Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, also commended both federal and state authorities, noting that the intervention would help ease the hardship faced by families who lost their livelihoods.
