As the nation marked Workers’ Day 2025, former Vice-Chair of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Abiye Tam-George, MBA, CGAN, delivered a passionate message urging members of the legal profession to reflect deeply on their working conditions and collectively pursue reform.

In a statement released on May 1, Abiye, who also served as Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee (2021–2023), acknowledged the resilience of lawyers across Nigeria while highlighting the growing hardships many face.

“Across courtrooms, chambers, corporate offices, and public service, lawyers are stretched—facing long hours, mounting pressure, dwindling remuneration, and at times, outright neglect,” she stated. “Yet, in the midst of it all, we rise. We continue to defend justice, give voice to the voiceless, and uphold the rule of law.”

Abiye’s message was both a tribute to legal professionals and a call to action. She emphasized the urgent need to explore sustainable and innovative approaches to improve the legal work environment, including enhanced welfare systems, mentorship structures, and advocacy for better working conditions.

“This Workers’ Day, I urge us all: let us not be wearied by the weight of our challenges, but inspired by the potential for advancement,” she said.

Concluding her message, Abiye expressed optimism for the future of the profession, calling on lawyers to unite in shaping a legal system where every practitioner is “valued, supported, and empowered.”
