The judicial history of Rivers State has been painstakingly documented for the first time in a landmark publication titled “History of Rivers State Judiciary: A Compendium of Personalities on the Bench.” Authored by Ampim Gogo Blankson, Esq., Deputy Director at the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Rivers State Judiciary, this richly detailed book presents a unique and authoritative narrative of the development, structure, and individuals who have shaped the judiciary in Rivers State since its creation in 1967.

This monumental publication is more than a historical record — it is a rare blend of law, biography, and institutional history. For the first time in the legal history of Rivers State, judicial officers — past and present — are comprehensively profiled in a single volume that also explores the legal, administrative, and political evolution of the judiciary.

Key Features Include:

  • A chronological history of the Rivers State Judiciary
  • Laws and regulations governing the Judiciary in the state
  • The appointment process of judges in Rivers State
  • A detailed list of Heads of Courts and Judges from inception to date
  • Judicial divisions of the High Court of Rivers State
  • Profiles and biographies of serving and retired judges
  • Iconic portraits of judges in ceremonial robes (scarlet with full-bottom wigs)
  • Selected rulings and judgments from Rivers State judges
  • A chapter on The Dark Years of the Rivers State Judiciary
  • The Revised Code of Conduct for judicial officers
“History of Rivers State Judiciary A Compendium of Personalities on the Bench.”

According to the author, the book is born out of a desire to preserve the legacies of judicial heroes whose contributions may otherwise fade with time. The judiciary, having grown from just a handful of judges in the 1970s to over 100 today, has undergone institutional and structural transformations worth documenting for posterity.

“This book aims to recall memories and interactions with eminent jurists who made significant contributions to justice delivery in Rivers State. It is intended to inspire, educate, and preserve the noble traditions of the Bench,” — Ampim Gogo Blankson, Esq.

In his comment on the book, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Hon. Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, DSSRS, described it as an unprecedented scholarly achievement:

“To the best of my knowledge, no person has produced such a compendium containing the brief biodata of all judicial officers or judges of the Rivers State Judiciary and their pronouncements from the creation of Rivers State in 1967 to date.”
