It was gathered that the magistrate made a report at a police station about how some suspected hoodlums on motorcycles tailed his car on his way from court sometime last year. The hoodlums were said to have been noticed loitering around the court premises earlier in the day, apparently waiting for the magistrate to close from work. The magistrate’s driver was said to have noticed them, tailing the car, and shortly the magistrate received a phone call from an unknown line, warning him to lift the order placed on their bank account or risked being attacked. According to a police source, following difficulty in tracking down the hoodlums along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, the police advised the magistrate, said to have handled a lot of cases by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, to relocate. The police said “since all efforts made to get clues as to the identities of the these men of the underworld proved abortive, the complainant, being a reputable person in the society, coupled with the rate of kidnapping in the country, was advised to change his residential address for his safety and that of his family.” It was, however, gathered that the magistrate lodged another complaint late last year about how some gun-toting hoodlums made an attempt on his life around Oshodi bridge. The gunmen were said to have been trailing him and took advantage of a gridlock on the bridge to close in on him and pointed a gun at him. The magistrate was, however, said to have been lucky as his driver was able to wriggle out of the traffic, which suddenly cleared, and sped off. TheNigerialawyer recalled that among other sensitive cases, Fadeyi was the coroner who conducted an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of a member of the Thisday Newspaper Editorial Board, Mr. Abayomi Ogundeji, about 2009. Unlike judges, magistrates do not have personal policemen attached to them for security. Magistrates and Sharia court judges in Niger State had in a petition last week given the state government a 21-day ultimatum to improve their working conditions, including provision of security. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Nasara Danmalam, has, however, reportedly said the issue was being looked into. It was learnt that cult activities are rife in the Apapa area where Fadeyi currently sits. A source close to the magistrate claimed that a gang of nine suspected members of Aye confraternity recently arraigned before the magistrate threatened to attack him. Our correspondent could, however, not confirm this as magistrates and judges do not speak to the press.]]>
