WHO I AM Noble colleague, I am Akorede Habeeb Lawal. I am the Principal Counsel of A.H. Lawal & Co (Habibi Chambers), Asaba, Delta State. I graduated from the University of Ilorin in 2009 and I was called to the Nigerian Bar the following year. The mandatory national service took me to the Department of Public Prosecution, Delta State Ministry of Justice, Asaba. After national service, I had a stint tutelage experience with M.N. Elunor & Co, Asaba. I was blessed to have the opportunity afterwards to work as a Legal Research Assistant to a Federal High Court Judge sitting in Asaba until his lordship’s transfer to Lagos division of the court. I can modestly say that I have enjoyed a thriving legal practice since then. I was born in 1988 in Ibadan to both teacher parents. I am an indigene of Ila-Orangun in Osun State. Active Member of the Bar From my days as a young lawyer, I have been actively involved in NBA activities. I was the Assistant Publicity Secretary of Asaba Branch from 2014 to 2016. The branch was impressed with my performance in that office and elected me to my current position of Publicity Secretary. I also serve the branch in other capacities — member of the Reconciliation Committee; Secretary of the Continuing Legal Education Committee and the Ad-hoc Committee on production of Asaba Branch Membership Directory. Contribution to the Legal Profession I have made modest contributions to the improvement of the image of our noble profession and the NBA through my other activities. First, as a columnist of “The Law and You” in The Pointer, an Asaba-based regional newspaper. Writings attracted great readership, as I shared with the public proper understanding of the important role a lawyer plays in the daily lives of the average citizen. Realizing the challenges of bail applicants in the course of my pupillage experience at the Department of Public Prosecution in the Delta State Ministry of Justice, I assited in editing the Nigerian Bail Application Report (2011), Vol. 1. The work is on the shelves of the libraries of many legal practitioners within and outside Delta State. Volunteering offered me to many pro bono opportunities, where I handled a good number of both civil and criminal matters, with commendations from the bench for my service. An extend of this public-spirited effort is my deliberate decision to offer legal advice and assistance to indigent persons. [caption id="attachment_90152" align="alignleft" width="300"] Akorede Habeeb Lawal[/caption] General Experience in Legal Profession I have prosecuted many cases of note in many courts of records. Like any true rounded lawyer, every aspect of practice is interesting, but I particularly enjoy brief-writing, election petition (particularly its procedures) and matters that border on the interpretation of the Constitution and other statutes. Beyond the excitement of advocacy, I derive satisfaction from seeing the resourcefulness and creativity that goes with being a servant in the Temple of Justice; ensuring that the course of justice is served! The fulfilment that comes from managing a law firm, especially, is only akin to the delight parents experience in watching their little baby grow. Seeing colleagues that have come into our law firm with little idea of what it means to be a lawyer, holding their own in law practice within a couple of weeks is also heartening. I appreciate the positive popularity I enjoy amongst my colleagues; the respect they genuinely offer me. But to also sense the respect of the judges I appear before, makes me feel distinguished. Receiving positive feedback from the public in course of my work, completes the three parameters for telling myself that I am on the right track in my service to my society. WHAT THIS MEANS TO ME It is time to do a self assessment of my modest efforts to serve our noble association and society. Buoyed by encouragement from my branch, I feel eminently ready because I have the requisite experience for the task ahead. My almost four-year experience in publicity roles in the Executive Committee of Asaba branch is strength I come with. Prompt delivery of information to members of the branch, leveraging various social media channels and my network of (conventional and new) media contacts are the hallmark of my achievement in office. I am hoping to place all these benefits at the disposal of our association, which now more than ever before needs to regain its voice on internal and national issues. Above all, I have the energy of untainted youth and the openness to learn on my side as I drive delivery. WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT More than anything, our bar needs the public to view it as a leading light in the vanguard for adherence to rule of law and good governance in the country. Therefore, in order to reposition our Law Society in front of civil vanguard, we must steadily change the perception of the public about lawyers. This perception is rooted in individual experiences of members of the public with our colleagues, the expectations of leadership placed on lawyers’ shoulders by the society, the perceived inadequacies of the judicial arm of government which of course is dominated by lawyers, prison congestion and the hustles of our younger colleagues. This defines the beginning of my thoughts on this mission and it is this essence that I have adopted as the 3Ps (#PositivePublicPerception). I really hope to share more ideas with you in this noble regard in the coming days while anticipating feedbacks on these ideas from you. Thanks for meeting me.]]>
