The Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) has announced a special workshop for young lawyers at its 2026 Annual Conference in Umuahia, Abia State, aimed at preparing the next generation of legal practitioners for careers in public interest law.

The workshop, titled “Young Lawyers and the Future of Public Interest Law,” will take place on Monday, November 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia.

The session will serve as the first pre-conference workshop at the five-day NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference, scheduled to run from November 9 to 13, 2026, under the theme “In Public Interest: Advancing Justice, Democracy and Development.”

According to the organisers, the workshop will focus on equipping young lawyers with the knowledge, professional guidance and practical skills required to build sustainable careers in public interest law.

Discussions will cover mentorship opportunities, career development in public interest practice, legal technology and innovation, pro bono legal services and strategic professional networking.

The session is designed to provide young legal practitioners with insights into the opportunities available in public interest law, while encouraging them to explore how legal practice can contribute to justice, democracy and development.

Francis Ekwere, a former First Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association and member of the Association’s National Executive Committee, will chair the workshop.

Igbeaku Evulukwu, a member of the NBA-SPIDEL Executive Committee, has been confirmed as the lead trainer for the session.

Other trainers include Maryam Abba, Operations Officer at The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL); Chinedu Agu, Principal of CREDO Legal; and Yusuf Temilola Nurudeen, winner of the 2026 International Bar Association Pro Bono Award.

The participation of the trainers will provide an opportunity for young lawyers to engage with legal professionals and practitioners experienced in legal innovation, professional development and pro bono practice.

The workshop will particularly examine the importance of mentorship in guiding young lawyers through the demands of public interest practice and the role of technology in shaping the future of legal services.

It will also address the opportunities available through pro bono work and the importance of building professional relationships that can support careers in public interest and development law.

Following the young lawyers’ workshop, a second pre-conference session focusing on women in the justice sector will take place at the same venue on Monday, November 9, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Both workshops form part of the activities lined up for the 2026 NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference, which will bring discussions on justice, democracy and development to Umuahia.

Young lawyers and other interested participants are encouraged to register for the conference through www.app.nbaspidel.ng.

The official conference hashtags are #umuahia2026 and #nbaspidel.
