The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved contracts to digitise 67 FCT High Court courtrooms, with work expected to begin within two weeks.

The General Counsel and Mandate Secretary of the FCT Legal Services Secretariat, Salman Dako, disclosed the approval in Abuja on Tuesday after a meeting of the FCT Administration Executive Council chaired by Wike.
Dako said the project would introduce electronic recording of court proceedings and a digital case management system, replacing processes that rely on handwritten records, manual filing and the physical tracking of cases.
“The scope of this project is the digitalisation of the High Courts in the FCT, including digital transformation and implementation of an electronic court recording and case management system,” he said.
“Meaning that we are transitioning the High Court from manual recording to digital recording, and electronic case management.”
According to Dako, the existing procedures can make it difficult to organise and retrieve records and may contribute to delays in the administration of justice. He said the approved system was intended to improve the speed, accessibility and management of court records.
“Transitioning to digital court management will resolve the persistent challenges linked to manual documentation and handwritten records,” he said.
Dako added that the project would support electronic filing by lawyers and litigants, reducing their dependence on physical documents. He noted that some judicial divisions outside the FCT had already begun adopting similar systems.
“I believe that this will be a very great improvement for us. Some judicial divisions have already started this outside the FCT, so I think this is the future and it is time we go along this route,” he said.
Dako said progress on the project should become visible within two weeks. The announcement did not specify a completion date, the contract value or when electronic filing would become available to court users.
