The Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Professor Abdullahi Musa, has explained that the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by more than 600 senior academics from public universities across Northern Nigeria followed what he described as a review and analysis of data on the performance of the administration in key sectors.

Musa, who spoke on Trust TV’s Daily Politics on Tuesday, said the gathering was designed to provide academics with a platform to examine available information, analyse it using systematic methods and make recommendations based on their findings.

According to him, the academics considered data relating to infrastructure, investment in education, agriculture and other sectors before arriving at their position.

“What the meeting indicated is that it is an avenue whereby academics will come together to identify specific data, analyse the data, and then provide an analysis using systematic methodology, and recommend the way forward,” he said.

Musa said various forms of sectoral information were presented at the meeting, including figures on infrastructural development, education and agriculture.

“During the meeting, a lot of data was presented, including issues related to sectoral data, like infrastructural development, investment in education, and agriculture, to just mention a few,” he stated.

The vice-chancellor pointed specifically to Federal Government interventions in the education sector, saying Kaduna State University had benefited from some of the programmes.

“If you look at development in education, the Bola Tinubu administration has expended billions of naira in support of education, and if you look at my university alone, our students receive over ₦1 billion in support,” Musa said.

He also cited support received by the university through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the National Sports Commission as examples of infrastructural interventions considered by the academics.

“In terms of infrastructural development in education, Kaduna State University has received enormous amount of support from TETFund and from the National Sports Commission, to mention just a few,” he added.

The endorsement has, however, generated criticism from opposition quarters. The African Democratic Congress reportedly urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to engage the academics involved as returning officers in the 2027 general election, raising questions about their perceived political neutrality.

Responding to questions over whether the position of the more than 600 academics could be regarded as representing lecturers across Northern Nigeria, Musa maintained that individual academics remained entitled to hold contrary views.

He said the participating lecturers had the right to express their views both individually and collectively, while acknowledging that other academics were equally free to disagree with their position.

The endorsement and the subsequent criticism have added to the debate over the political role of academics ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly given the involvement of university lecturers in election duties traditionally assigned to them by INEC.
