Academic activities failed to resume across the Federal Government’s 155 unity colleges on Monday as parents and guardians withheld their children and wards in protest against the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to its Old Boys Association.

Checks across the country reportedly showed that the federal government colleges remained largely deserted, with students staying away despite the end of the long holiday.

The development followed growing opposition to the concession of King’s College, with parents expressing concern that allowing the arrangement to stand could pave the way for similar concessions across other unity schools.

Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association of Unity Colleges in the South-West, Mr Ayopo Somefun, said the schools would remain shut until the Federal Government rescinds the decision.

According to him, parents fear that once the concession of King’s College is allowed to stand, the policy could be extended to the remaining unity colleges.

Somefun argued that such an arrangement would undermine the purpose for which the federal unity schools were established.
