Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr Muiz Banire, will turn 60 in October, with plans underway for a major celebration at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos.

The event is expected to bring together family members, colleagues, associates and prominent public figures who have interacted with Banire across his decades-long career in law, academia, government, civic advocacy and corporate leadership.

Banire holds a PhD in Property Law from the University of Lagos, where he lectured between 1991 and 2010. He was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2015.

His public service career in Lagos State spanned 12 years, during which he served three terms as a commissioner between 1999 and 2011.

As Commissioner for Transportation, his ministry played a role in conceptualising the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and in laying the early groundwork for the Bus Rapid Transit system.

He later served as Commissioner for the Environment, where he introduced zero-tolerance offices across four local government areas to address environmental nuisances and also hosted what was described as West Africa’s first International Climate Change Summit.

Beyond executive government, Banire has also served in institutions connected to the administration and regulation of the legal profession. He was appointed to the National Judicial Council in 2017 and is a member of the Body of Benchers.

He is also an author of legal texts, including The Nigerian Law of Trusts and Land Management in Nigeria.

Banire’s career has equally extended into the corporate sector. He chaired the governing board of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria from 2018, where he was involved in the oversight of the corporation’s mandate concerning toxic banking assets.

In July 2026, he joined the board of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc as a Non-Executive Director.

His civic engagements include United Action For Change, an organisation he founded to promote human rights and political accountability. In December 2024, he was inducted into the Nigerian Books of Record Hall of Fame.

As he approaches 60, Banire’s professional journey reflects a career that has moved across the classroom, courtroom, government, civic space and boardroom.

The October celebration in Lagos is expected to provide an opportunity for associates from those different phases of his career to gather in honour of the milestone.
