Romanian prosecutors have indicted controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, on charges arising from an investigation into alleged human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism, known as DIICOT, filed the fresh indictment on Friday.

Andrew Tate was indicted on allegations including trafficking of minors, money laundering, sexual intercourse with a minor and witness tampering, while Tristan was charged with complicity in some of the alleged offences.

Prosecutors alleged that the brothers recruited victims by pretending to be romantically interested in them and making false promises of marriage before coercing them into producing pornographic content for an online webcam business.

One alleged victim was reportedly 15 years old when she was recruited in the United Kingdom and subsequently taken to Romania for sexual exploitation.

The prosecutors further alleged that the brothers generated substantial proceeds from the alleged exploitation and laundered part of the money through the purchase of luxury vehicles.

The new indictment followed an investigation that began in 2022 and comes after a Romanian court halted an earlier prosecution because of procedural and evidential irregularities.

The brothers’ lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, denied the allegations and stressed that the filing of an indictment did not amount to a conviction or determination of guilt.

“DIICOT has now chosen to file a new indictment. We will examine every aspect of it with the same level of scrutiny, and we will challenge any evidential, procedural or legal deficiencies,” Vidineac said.

Andrew and Tristan, who hold dual United States and British citizenship, are presently being held at a federal detention facility in Miami after their arrest by United States marshals in July.

Their detention followed an extradition request from the United Kingdom, where they face separate allegations including rape, sexual assault and trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The Romanian and British proceedings are legally distinct, although both involve allegations of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The brothers have denied wrongdoing and are contesting the British extradition request.

Romanian authorities may seek to proceed with the latest case in their absence while the United States courts determine the extradition proceedings.

The Tate brothers maintain that the criminal cases against them are politically motivated. Their lawyers are seeking their release from custody while the extradition request is considered.

The allegations remain unproven, and both defendants are presumed innocent until convicted by a competent court.
