The School of Politics, Policy and Governance has spotlighted human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, as part of its nationwide campaign to identify Nigerians with strong records of integrity, public service and leadership who could be encouraged to enter politics.

In a campaign video tagged #FindingChidi, the SPPG described Odinkalu as a human rights lawyer who has spent his career working to make Nigeria’s laws deliver meaningful results for ordinary citizens.

The campaign forms part of the School’s “National Search for the Best of Us to Join Politics,” an initiative through which Nigerians are being encouraged to identify and nominate individuals in their communities and professional circles who have demonstrated integrity, courage and commitment to the public good.

The video brings together different moments from Odinkalu’s career in human rights, law, public advocacy and institutional leadership before posing the question to Nigerians: “Do you know someone like them? Nominate them.”

According to the campaign material, Odinkalu’s work as a lawyer and former head of the National Human Rights Commission represents the type of public-interest leadership the School wants Nigerians to identify and encourage into political and governance spaces.

The SPPG said its search is targeted at people with records of service and a willingness to challenge dysfunctional systems rather than individuals motivated principally by access to political power.

The broader campaign argues that Nigeria is not short of capable citizens but that many people with the competence and character required to improve governance remain outside the country’s political leadership structures.

In outlining the philosophy behind the initiative, the School said it is searching for Nigerians with integrity and a demonstrable record of serving others, including people who have chosen public purpose over personal ambition.

The campaign therefore seeks to encourage Nigerians to look beyond traditional politicians and identify professionals, community leaders, activists, entrepreneurs and other citizens whose records suggest they could contribute positively to governance.

The SPPG is currently admitting participants into its Class of 2027, with nominations forming part of the effort to broaden the pool of Nigerians exposed to structured political, policy and governance education. The School has similarly been highlighting Nigerians from different professional and community backgrounds while asking members of the public to nominate people they believe should be prepared for political leadership.

The campaign around Odinkalu carries the inscription: “A National Search for the best of us to join Politics”, alongside the hashtag #FindingChidi.

The School describes its leadership programme as an effort to equip participants with knowledge of governance, political institutions, leadership and the practical workings of public office.

SPPG says more than 1,000 people have gone through its programmes in the past four years, with some subsequently taking up public offices and others participating in spaces where public-policy decisions are made.

Members of the public who know individuals whose character, professional record and commitment to public service reflect the qualities highlighted in the #FindingChidi campaign are being encouraged to submit nominations for the SPPG Class of 2027.

The School is also receiving applications for its Class of 2027 as it continues what it describes as a national search for Nigerians capable of bringing integrity, competence and service-oriented leadership into the country’s political system.
