Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, has clarified that Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, remains “his son” despite recent political exchanges ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

Uzodimma, who also chairs the All Progressives Congress Osun Governorship Campaign Council, said he is not a registered voter in Osun State and is only involved in the electioneering process to support the APC candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

The governor made the clarification in a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Oguwike Nwachuku.

His reaction followed comments credited to Ambrose Nwogwugwu, who had criticised Davido after the singer appealed for a peaceful conduct of the August 15 governorship election.

Davido, who is a nephew of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had urged Uzodimma to help ensure that the election is free, fair and peaceful.

However, Uzodimma distanced himself from the remarks credited to Nwogwugwu, insisting that he did not authorise him or anyone else to speak on his behalf.

According to the governor, the comments were personal opinions and did not represent his position or that of the APC Governorship Campaign Council.

Reaffirming his relationship with the award-winning musician, Uzodimma said, “Davido remains my son.”

He explained that his own presence in Osun for the campaign was solely because of his membership of the APC and his role in supporting the party’s candidate, not because he has voting rights in the state.

The governor maintained that the APC remains committed to a peaceful, free, fair and credible electoral process in Osun State.

He added that it is normal in democratic politics for party leaders and members to campaign for candidates in states where they are not registered voters.

Uzodimma urged Davido, residents of Osun State and the general public to disregard the comments attributed to Nwogwugwu, saying the clarification was necessary to avoid misunderstanding ahead of the governorship election.
