The United States military has launched what it described as a “heavy wave of strikes” across Iran, one day after an attempted missile attack on American troops at a base in Jordan.

US Central Command said on Wednesday that its forces struck “dozens” of targets linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps over a period of about two hours.
The targets reportedly included military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance sites and defence installations.
The strikes came after President Donald Trump threatened strong retaliation against Iran, saying Tehran would “get a beating” following the attack on US troops in Jordan.
“We’re gonna be hitting them very hard because it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming. They’re asking us not to do it. It’s our turn,” Trump said.
Iranian state media reported that two people were injured in attacks on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while explosions were also reported in Khuzestan province in northwestern Iran.
The latest US operation has raised concerns that Washington may be moving towards a wider and more sustained military campaign against Iran.
According to reports, the head of US Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, has presented Trump with a proposal for intense strikes aimed at significantly degrading Iran’s missile stockpiles.
The plan, reportedly described as a “go big” approach, is intended to end the cycle of repeated strikes and counter-strikes between the two countries.
The proposed campaign could last up to two weeks, although it remains unclear whether Trump has formally approved that option.
Other senior military officials, including General Dan “Raisin” Caine, were reportedly concerned about the pressure the conflict is placing on US supplies of defensive weapons, including air defence munitions and Patriot missile interceptors.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, however, said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Admiral Cooper and General Caine were united on the administration’s strategy.
“Secretary Hegseth, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Cooper, and Chairman Caine stand completely aligned and are united in mission, strategy, and resolve regarding overseas operations involving Iran,” Parnell said.
Trump’s latest threats followed what US Central Command described as an attempted surprise attack by Iran using ballistic missiles against American forces in Jordan.
CENTCOM said US forces successfully intercepted all the Iranian missiles.
Before the latest strikes inside Iran, the United States and Saudi Arabia had also carried out strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. CENTCOM said those strikes were retaliation for a series of drone attacks and not the attempted missile attack in Jordan.
Trump said the US-Saudi operation was coordinated with the Iraqi government.
The renewed hostilities came after a brief lull in fighting between Washington and Tehran. Relative calm over the weekend had ended nearly two weeks of continuous clashes following the breakdown of a June memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran.
The months-long conflict has centred partly on efforts to get Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route and one of the major flashpoints in the crisis.
Trump has repeatedly threatened further escalation against Tehran, including saying last week that he was considering an attack “bigger than ever before.”
Earlier this week, he also revisited the possibility of striking a suspected Iranian nuclear facility known as Pickaxe Mountain, while rebuking Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for publicly discussing the site.
Tensions also spread to other fronts, as drone strikes reportedly ignited fires on two natural gas vessels at the Egyptian port of Damietta, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey.
The vessels were identified as a US-owned floating storage facility and a Greek-owned tanker. No injuries were immediately reported, and it was not clear who was responsible for the strikes.
If Iran or its allies are confirmed to be responsible, the incident could mark a significant widening of the conflict, as Egypt has largely avoided direct military action during the war despite being a close US ally and regional mediator.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major point of disagreement. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said Tehran had rejected a proposal from Oman to jointly manage ship traffic through the strait.
He said Oman’s proposal included dividing the strait into two routes, but Iran offered a counterproposal for a temporary transit arrangement through its territorial waters.
Gharibabadi added that Iran’s position is that the strait should “never return to its prewar situation,” when ships moved freely.
The renewed escalation immediately affected global markets, with Brent crude reportedly rising by 7.3 per cent to $88.093 per barrel.
The latest developments have deepened fears that the conflict could return to full-scale war, while also raising concerns that prolonged fighting may further reduce US stockpiles of advanced munitions needed to defend American bases and allies in the region.
