American singer and dancer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray over a violent confrontation at a London nightclub in 2023, after prosecutors dropped the more serious charges previously brought against him.

The 37-year-old singer entered the guilty plea alongside his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, popularly known as Hoody Baby, during a brief hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Friday.
Both men admitted affray after prosecutors discontinued charges of assault, attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
The case arose from an incident in the early hours of February 19, 2023, at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, during which music producer Abe Diaw sustained injuries.
Police and prosecutors said closed-circuit television footage captured Brown striking Diaw several times on the head with a glass bottle before the victim was pursued through the nightclub, pushed to the ground and kicked.
Akinlolu was also accused of punching Diaw during the incident.
The Crown Prosecution Service said the assault continued as Diaw attempted to escape through the crowded nightclub, adding that he was kicked while seated and defenceless on the floor.
Diaw was subsequently taken to hospital, where he received treatment for injuries to his head and knee.
Detective Constable Zara Ripamonti of the Metropolitan Police described the incident as a disgraceful and unprovoked assault that left a man requiring hospital treatment.
She said there was no place for serious violence in London and expressed satisfaction that Brown and Akinlolu had accepted that their conduct was not only unacceptable but criminal.
Ripamonti added that the case followed a lengthy investigation involving cooperation between law enforcement agencies in the United Kingdom and their international counterparts.
Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor with CPS London South, similarly described the incident as a vicious and unprovoked attack in a crowded nightclub.
She said Brown used a glass bottle to strike the victim twice on the head, stressing that such violence was unacceptable and that prosecutors would continue working with police and other criminal justice agencies to demonstrate that no individual was above the law.
The court proceedings involving Brown and Akinlolu lasted less than five minutes.
Judge Tony Baumgartner adjourned the case until October 26, when both defendants are expected to be sentenced.
Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment under United Kingdom law. However, Brown remains on bail and has been permitted to continue travelling, provided he returns to the UK by October 25, one day before the sentencing hearing.
The singer, known for hit songs including Loyal, Look At Me Now and With You, greeted supporters as he arrived at the courthouse.
Several fans gathered outside the court, playing his music and displaying signs expressing support for him.
Earlier in the proceedings, Brown was required to provide a £5 million security sum as part of his bail conditions, enabling him to continue his world tour.
Under the arrangement, the singer is required to surrender his passport upon arriving in each country during his travels.
The guilty plea adds to Brown’s history of legal troubles.
In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, shortly before the Grammy Awards.
He was sentenced to 180 days of community labour and placed on probation for five years.
Brown later said the incident made him feel like a monster and acknowledged that it would continue to haunt him.
