New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has said a serious software error at the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles led to about 6,600 non-U.S. citizens being wrongly registered to vote, with fewer than 400 of them allegedly casting ballots.

Sherrill disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday, describing the failure as reckless and unacceptable.

“I am appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen,” the governor said.

According to her, the affected residents were registered between June 2023 and June 2024 after applying for driver’s licences and identification cards. She said they had indicated that they were not U.S. citizens, but the system registered them to vote despite their responses.

The governor explained that the error occurred when applicants answered “no” on a keypad after being asked whether they were U.S. citizens.

“Our preliminary analysis shows fewer than 400 individuals who were newly registered for the first time because of the error voted,” Sherrill said.

She added that the affected individuals were registered across different political categories, including Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters, and were spread across various parts of the state.

Sherrill said the error occurred before she assumed office and announced that the vendor responsible for administering the identification system would be replaced.

The disclosure comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to push for stricter voter-identification and proof-of-citizenship requirements through the proposed SAVE America Act, which seeks to create nationwide voting rules.

Reacting to the development, Sherrill accused Trump of lacking credibility on election integrity, saying he had spread false claims about U.S. voting systems and attempted to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.

She said her administration would address the problem openly and transparently.

“The difference is simple: when we find a problem, we don’t hide it, deny it, or invent conspiracies. We investigate it, we fix it, and we tell the public,” she said.

Republicans, however, seized on the disclosure as further justification for stronger election rules. The White House rapid response team posted on X that the incident was “yet another reason” to pass the SAVE America Act.

Florida Republican Congresswoman Laurel Lee described the error as a “catastrophic failure” and called for an investigation.

The controversy also comes amid wider tension between the Trump administration and several states over voter rolls and election administration.

Last week, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin reportedly told states that their voter rolls needed to be reviewed to remove ineligible voters. He warned that the administration could consider withholding federal election funds from states that fail to comply.

DHS has urged states to use an expanded national database to check whether non-citizens are registered to vote. However, investigations by ProPublica and ABC News have raised concerns that the system could incorrectly flag eligible U.S. citizens.

In the United States, elections are administered by individual states, but the Trump administration has sought to increase federal involvement in election procedures ahead of the November midterm elections.
