Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz “until further notice,” escalating regional tensions amid worsening relations between Tehran and Washington.

According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC Navy said the waterway was closed after what it described as foreign attempts to impose an “illegal route” for shipping through the strait. It warned that no vessel would be allowed to pass until what Iranian officials called United States intervention in the region comes to an end.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments, and any disruption is likely to raise fresh concerns over global energy supply, maritime insurance and regional security.
The IRGC Navy said several vessels had ignored warnings to correct their course and move within approved routes. It further claimed that one vessel, which allegedly turned off its systems and endangered maritime security, was stopped after warning shots were fired.
Iranian media later reported that the vessel was targeted with a cruise missile after allegedly ignoring instructions to turn back.
The closure comes as Iran and Oman continue talks over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Oman’s state news agency said officials from both countries agreed to continue technical and political discussions to ensure safe and free passage through the waterway under international law.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, held talks in Muscat with Omani officials on possible arrangements for shipping through the strait. Reports said Oman proposed two separate routes, one through Iranian territorial waters and another through Omani waters, but Tehran was said to favour a single jointly managed mechanism that would keep Iran central to any arrangement.
Iranian officials have maintained that no third party should control navigation through the strait, arguing that the waterway lies within Iranian and Omani territorial waters.
At the same time, diplomatic efforts are continuing across the region. Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, held talks with officials from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan on efforts to reduce escalation and promote regional stability.
Qatar also stressed the need for dialogue, diplomacy and implementation of the United States-Iran memorandum of understanding.
However, the military and political rhetoric has continued to rise. United States President Donald Trump reportedly threatened to “completely decimate and destroy” Iran if Tehran acts on alleged threats to assassinate him.
US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, also said Israel had warned Washington about what it described as a specific Iranian plot against Trump.
In Tehran, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly pledged to avenge his father’s “innocent blood” in his first message since the funeral, adding a personal dimension to an already tense standoff.
Analysts quoted in the report said Iran appears to be using the Strait of Hormuz as a major negotiating card, sending two messages at once: that diplomacy remains possible, but escalation is also on the table.
The wider regional situation also remains volatile. Lebanon has reportedly confirmed it will take part in the next round of talks with Israel in Rome, while the Lebanese army said it was ready to deploy to any area from which Israel withdraws.
Meanwhile, Lebanese state media reported renewed Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon, including air strikes, machine-gun fire and warning leaflets dropped over towns near areas Israel describes as a security zone.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said the death toll from Israeli attacks since March 2 had risen to 4,322, with 12,210 injured.
In Gaza, reports also said Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man in Khan Younis, while aid truck drivers protested the killing of one of their colleagues. Demonstrations were also reported in Sweden against Israel’s ceasefire violations and restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza.
The developments suggest that the crisis around Hormuz has now become part of a wider regional confrontation involving Iran, the United States, Israel, Lebanon, Gaza and Gulf diplomatic actors.
For now, Iran appears to be holding the Strait of Hormuz as its strongest point of leverage, while regional mediators continue efforts to prevent a wider military escalation.
