Justice Abiodun Azeem Akinyemi of the Court of Appeal is set to deliver the keynote address at PrivCon 2026, the 4th Annual Privacy Conference, scheduled to hold on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at The Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The conference, which will be held in a hybrid format, is organised as part of efforts to deepen conversations around privacy, data protection and the role of key institutions in building a stronger data governance framework in Nigeria.

According to the event flyer, Justice Akinyemi will speak on the topic, “From Unfamiliarity to Competence: The Role of the Judiciary in Advancing Privacy and Data Protection Rights in Nigeria.”

The keynote address is expected to examine how Nigerian courts are moving from limited exposure to privacy and data protection disputes to a more developed understanding of the legal and regulatory issues arising under Nigeria’s emerging data protection regime.

The address is also expected to highlight the role of the judiciary in interpreting privacy rights, enforcing data protection obligations and holding organisations accountable for the handling of personal data.

The keynote comes at a time when Nigeria’s data protection framework, anchored by the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, continues to evolve through regulatory guidance, compliance obligations and emerging litigation.

Legal observers say the judiciary will play a decisive role in determining the practical strength of the law, especially in cases involving data breaches, unlawful processing of personal information, digital rights and remedies available to affected individuals.

This year’s edition of PrivCon carries the theme, “Privacy Architecture: #EveryBrickCounts,” which reflects the organisers’ message that building an effective privacy ecosystem requires the collective contribution of regulators, businesses, lawyers, technologists, compliance professionals, civil society and the courts.

Justice Akinyemi’s participation brings a strong judicial perspective to the conference and signals growing interest from the bench in engaging with the practical challenges of privacy and data protection enforcement in Nigeria.

The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and will bring together regulators, legal practitioners, compliance experts, data protection professionals, technology stakeholders and other industry participants.

Organisers also announced that registration for the conference is open through the link bit.ly/privcon2026, while registration closes on July 30, 2026.

Further details on the full lineup of speakers and sessions are expected to be announced ahead of the conference.
